Encouraging Excellence in the Caribbean Community

Encouraging Excellence in the Caribbean Community

According to statistics, only 23 per cent of children of Latin American and Caribbean descent in Canada go on to tertiary education and one University of Toronto (U of T) professor believes that part of the reason for this low statistic could be due to the lack of “cultural capital” or a system or network of influence that sets a student up for success.

In 2011, Chartered Accountant, Celia Meikle decided to take action and create a forum in which both students and parents could explore educational and leadership opportunities that will help build them into solid, contributing and influential Canadian citizens, and so the Excellence Conference was born.

The Excellence Conference connects students aged 11-21 to successful members of the Caribbean community, including trades-persons, doctors, vice principals, university professors, lawyers, business owners, journalists, engineers, banking and finance professionals, graphic designers and more. Students will have access to priceless information on choosing a career path, the education required, scope for upward mobility, and critical success factors for owning and operating a business.

Mississauga Chiropractor, Dr. Nekessa Remy, joins the 2015 conference as a role model to participate in the Role Model Career Fair to help guide students on choosing a career and the steps to achieve success in any role.

Other participants include Lawyer & Entrepreneur, Tanya Walker as the keynote speaker, Career Coach Daisy Wright, Chemical Engineer, Erica Griffith, the Honorable Justice, Gregory Regis and more.

There will be two events, the West Conference in Mississauga, ON, Saturday, September 26 and the East Conference in Ajax, ON, Saturday, October 3. This is a free event for students and parents. More details are available at www.excellenceconference.ca.
